COURSE OVERVIEW

Our purpose is to explore the entrepreneurship. We will examine the entrepreneurial process including the identification of opportunities; planning for the creation of new ventures, products and/or services to take advantage of these opportunities; the acquisition and utilization of the resources necessary to implement such plans; the management of ventures through growth and maturity; and possible divestiture. We will do so in an Aboriginal context paying particular attention to the role of entrepreneurship in economic development.

Our basic premises are that

(i)                it is possible and desirable to learn the skills necessary to do entrepreneurship; that is the identification of business opportunities and the planning, creation and operation of new ventures,

(ii)             the usefulness of entrepreneurship extends beyond the creation of new ventures to the revitalization and ongoing success of existing enterprises, and

(iii)    entrepreneurship is an essential element of economic development.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is divided into three parts, with a total of thirteen units to be covered in a 13 week period (i.e. approximately one unit per week). Each unit corresponds to a chapter in the text. You are strongly encouraged to progress through each unit by doing the required readings, listening to the audio component, and then answering the questions at the end of each unit as a means of assessing your progress. Where cases have been assigned, questions have been included. Your considered comments in answer to these questions and your thoughtful responses to the comments of others will determine your participation mark.
