EAC Certification recognizes editors who have demonstrated a high level of
knowledge and skill in their profession. The program consists of four tests: Proofreading,
Copy Editing, and Structural and Stylistic Editing. (From 2006 to 2009, a
different testing framework was used and the four tests offered were Elementary
Knowledge of the Publishing Process, Proofreading, Copy Editing, and Structural
and Stylistic Editing.) Currently, EAC is adapting its certification program to reflect the revised Professional
Editorial Standards (PES) that came into effect on January 1,
2010. Two of the new study guides that will replace the old four-volume guide
based on PES-1999 are now available. By July 2012, the old study guide will be
replaced completely by guides based on PES-2009: Vol. 1: Proofreading Vol. 2: Copy Editing Vol. 3: Stylistic Editing Vol. 4: Structural Editing Click on the title to learn more about the new individual study guides: Four-volume study guide based on PES-1999 Until all four PES-2009 study guides are available in 2012, Volumes 1 and 4
of the original PES-1999 study guide may be purchased by those doing advance
preparation for the Stylistic Editing and Structural Editing tests or by those
wishing to improve their editing skills and knowledge. Please note that although the two volumes from the PES-1999 study guide described
below will allow you to do advance preparation for EAC Certification tests and
will help you improve your editing skills and knowledge, they are based
on professional editorial standards that are no longer in effect. (See “Does it matter
whether I prepare using the original four-volume PES-1999 study guide or the
new PES-2009 study guides?”) For information about the Editors’ Association of Canada or EAC
