Lesson 1

Dividing Words into Syllables

The correct pronunciation of French words depends upon how they are divided into syllables. Reading Lesson 1 in the printed manual before listening to the audio will help you to understand the rules of dividing words into syllables. While listening to the audio for this lesson take note that on the screen you will see the following syllable types in French: a vowel alone; consonant plus vowel; or consonant, vowel, consonant. That can best be observed by reading the phonetic script which is in square brackets. You are not expected to know all the phonetic symbols, but you can see that many of them are the same as the letters of the alphabet. You will learn the rest of them in Lesson 4.
